How do I prepare my cat for a travel carrier?
Carrier preparation works best before travel day. Feline veterinary guidance recommends making the carrier familiar, choosing an appropriate carrier, and gradually building positive associations instead of introducing it only when the cat is about to leave home. Start before the journey
Turn the carrier into familiar territory.
Add familiar scent
Place familiar bedding or another safe item carrying a known scent inside. Cat Friendly Homes recommends familiar soft bedding and positive associations such as treats or toys. Source: Cat Friendly Homes carrier guidance.
Build gradually
Let your cat explore voluntarily before progressing to closing the door, lifting the carrier, and brief practice trips. Do not rush from one step to the next.
Secure it in the vehicle
The Feline Veterinary Medical Association recommends secure carrier placement and specifically discusses placement on the vehicle floor behind a front seat.
If your cat is still distressed
Ask the veterinarian before improvising.
Some cats remain highly fearful despite preparation. Veterinary guidance notes that a veterinarian may recommend medication for some cats before travel. Do not give a sedative, anti-anxiety medication, or other drug simply because it helped another cat; use the prescribing veterinarian's directions for your individual cat.
